Born the daughter of Naanda and Jamili, Kula and her twin brother Chumvi were in a precarious situation from the beginning. They were the grand children of Siti, and with Chumvi being male and Kula being female they both could have had much worse fates. Kula could have been scooped up and turned into another student of Siti's, but because Jamili and Naanda wanted out of the outlands they were able to evade danger. However, Jamili died making sure the family was able to leave. So Kula and her brother were destined to grow up in the Pride Lands. They arrived with Naanda and Zira, and shortly after they were able to meet with her aunt Sarabi and the rest of their family.
As Kula grew, she became close friends with Tama and Nala and noticed how Zira treated their brother Chumvi. Kula didn't understand it, but she also didn't like it. Eventually, Mufasa was killed and Simba seemed to have been killed with him in an accident. Kula and the rest of the Pride Landers were subjected to living with hyenas after the fact, and she stayed close friends with Nala. Things were changed for the better when Simba returned to reclaim the throne. Although it ached her heart when it happened, Kula couldn't do anything about Zira and the others of her family being banished. She had proven herself to be a loyal Pride Lander, so Kula was allowed to stay.
