Zuri was born in the Pride Lands (as far as she knows) roughly around the same time as Kiara and Tiifu, and from the beginning she was groomed to be a part of the princess's entourage. Zuri was taught that, in order to be important, she needed to make connections with important lions. That meant that she had to do her best to befriend Kiara. When Zuri was old enough to do just that, she found herself more or less a part of Kiara's circle of friends quickly enough. She also befriended a doofy little cub named Tiifu, and together the three of them were more or less best friends. Zuri was doing it more so to gain an important status than anything else, at least at first, but she did grow to actually care about Kiara as a friend. Tiifu, too, was a cub she began to call friend. This was in spite of the fact that the ditzy cub could be a little irritating at times.
When Kiara's younger brother Kion was assigned the role of Lion Guard leader, Zuri was skeptical of how well that would go over. She didn't anticipate it ending well when he chose Bunga, of all animals, to be the Bravest. But the guard Kion put together did well enough, and Zuri couldn't care less beyond that. So she settled back into life as normal and let things happen around her.
