Can I still just be me,
The way I am?
Can I trust in my own heart,
Or am I just one part

History
The second cub of King Simba and Queen Nala, Kiara doesn’t really remember much of what came before her time. The outsiders and their exile, she had no knowledge of at all for the longest time; and even older brother Kopa was nothing more than a hazy memory. While she used to trail around after him all the time, back in those days Kiara was too young to really grasp much of what was going on, and what few memories she had of him have been more or less eclipsed by everything else since.
In fact, as far as Kiara could remember, she had always been next in line for the throne; though, truth be told, this wasn’t something that the young girl took any pleasure from. While other cubs might see future queen as a desirable thing to be, Kiara had a much better idea of how much hard work it was. Daddy often seemed to be burdened with the cares of ruling the kingdom, and the little cub had no desire to take on such a burden herself. She just wanted to play, have fun, and go wherever she wanted; no restrictions need apply.
Of course, that could only extend so far. Even in her younger years, Kiara was kept on an uncomfortably short leash, with babysitters following her every move to make sure she didn’t wander off – which, in all fairness, she would have done in a heartbeat – and had to endure everyone calling her ‘princess’ or ‘your highness’. The royal titles chaffed something awful.
And a rebellious trip to the Outlands didn’t help her cause any. While, as far as Kiara was concerned, she’d done good there – she’d made a new friend, survived the crocodiles, and hadn’t been eaten by Zira – Daddy obviously didn’t see things the same way. A few repeated attempts at trying to slip off to see her new friend again did her no favours either.
It was only as she grew out of her somewhat-boisterous phase that Kiara began to settle. She made a couple of friends in the form of slightly younger cubs Tiifu and Zuri; and, having them, Kiara’s fascination with Kovu and the Outlands waned somewhat. While she still regarded him as her best friend who she wanted to see again, the young royal also realised that it was her duty to keep her two new friends safe; she could get them into serious trouble if they followed her on one of her forbidden Outlands expeditions, and that was something to be prevented at all costs. It was due to this that she began to settle some to the Pride Lands – and once he realised this, Simba took it as the sign that she was ready to start learning the ropes of being queen.
Kiara still wasn’t exactly best pleased about this; although, as she matured, she grew to reluctantly accept. If she had no choice in the matter, after all, she may as well make the best of it. On the plus side, it gave her something to lord over kid brother Kion, if nothing else; but beyond that, Kiara has gradually been growing into her more responsible role. A few days practice as acting queen, in particular, helped give her some perspective – and as of present, Kiara feels happier with her future role than before.

“Right, I’ve got it.”
A few paces behind her mother, Kiara nodded her head once, swiftly mimicking Nala’s pose. It was less deliberate mother-daughter time and more a learning the ropes of being queen thing; as leader of the hunt, Mom was the best person Kiara knew to teach her how to be a keen huntress – except, maybe, for Grandma Sarabi.
The young lioness hunched a little bit more, and began to creep forward, as per Mom’s instructions. Kiara was still incredibly new at this, not altogether confident in herself; but at Nala’s encouraging smile, the cub felt a wave of fresh confidence sweep over her. She could DO this!
Of course, she wasn’t exactly hunting, really; that was the job of the full-grown lionesses, of course. But she was learning the techniques that would be invaluable once she came of age herself, even if that was a while away. Biting her lip in a way that betrayed her still-lingering apprehension, Kiara crept ahead, step after step, keeping herself low to the ground as Mom had taught her. There were a couple of oryx nearby, and while Kiara had no intention of harming them… if this went well, she should at least give them a good scare.
If only she was as stealthy as she believed she was…
The snap of a stick beneath her paw, one that she hadn’t noticed until after she’d stepped on it, alerted the two animals. Desperate not to lose the element of surprise completely – for what it was worth – Kiara flung herself towards them—
Tripped over her paws and sprawled in the dirt instead.
Clearly, Kiara thought grumpily as she picked herself up, amidst the oryx’s laughter, she wasn’t yet as good at this as she’d have liked to believe.
